Psoriasis Write For Us
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis Write For Us: Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes itchy, red, scaly patches visible on the knees, elbows, trunk, and scalp. And also, it is a chronic, non-contagious skin disease and produces thickened, scaly skin rashes. Besides, dry, silvery-white skin scales are the result of the excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells.
Psoriasis is primarily a defective inflammatory response. Besides, skin cells are also caused by inflammatory chemicals produced by specialized white blood cells called T cells. In addition, Psoriasis usually affects the skin on the elbows, knees, and scalp.
So, Psoriasis is a long-term (chronic) disease with no cure. Further, It tends to cycle, swells for a few weeks or months, then goes away for a while or goes into remission.
Psoriasis is an immune system problem. Triggers include infections, stress, and colds. Hence, the common symptom is a rash, but sometimes it affects the nails or joints.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
- Red patches of skin among thick silvery scales
- Small patches of peeling (seen in children)
- Dry, cracked skin that bleed or itch
- Itching, burning, or pain
- Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails
- Swollen and stiff joints
- Psoriasis patches can range from a few dandruff-like flaking spots to large rashes covering large areas.
The most affected areas are the lower back, elbows, knees, legs, soles of the feet, scalp, face, and palms.
Types of Psoriasis
- Plaque psoriasis – Firstly, plaque psoriasis causes dry, raised red patches (lesions) on the skin covered with silvery scales. The plaques can be itchy or painful, and there may be few or many of them. So, they usually appear on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp.
- Nail psoriasis – Psoriasis can affect the fingernails and toenails, causing pitting, abnormal nail growth, and discoloration. Besides, Psoriatic nails can loosen and separate from the nail bed (onycholysis). Severe cases can cause the nail to crumble.
- Guttate psoriasis – Secondly, this type mainly affects young adults and children. It is usually triggered by a bacterial infection such as a sore throat. So, small teardrop-shaped scaly lesions characterize it on the trunk, arms, or legs.
- Inverse psoriasis – This mainly affects the skin folds of the groin, buttocks, and breasts. So, Inverse psoriasis causes soft patches of red skin that are made worse by friction and sweating. Yeast infections can trigger this type of psoriasis.
- Pustular psoriasis – And also, this rare form of psoriasis causes clearly defined pus-filled lesions in scattered patches (generalized pustular psoriasis) or smaller areas on the palms or soles of the feet.
- Erythrodermic psoriasis – Thus, it can cover the entire body with a scaly, red rash that can itch or burn intensely.
- Psoriatic arthritis – Further, Psoriatic arthritis causes swollen and painful joints typical of arthritis. And also, joint symptoms are the first or only symptom or sign of psoriasis. And also range from mild to severe, and psoriatic arthritis affects any joint. Besides, It causes stiffness and progressive joint damage, leading to joint damage in extreme cases.
Causes of Psoriasis
- Infections, such as sore throat or skin infections
- Climate, freezing and dry
- Injuries to the skin, like a cut or scrape, an insect bite, or severe sunburn
- Fatigue
- Smoking and secondhand smoke exposure
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Some medications, including lithium, high blood pressure medications, and antimalarial medications
- Rapid withdrawal of oral or systemic corticosteroids
Treatment of Psoriasis
There are many effective treatment options for psoriasis. So, the best treatment is determined individually by the attending physician. So, it depends on the type of disease, the severity and amount of skin affected, and the type of insurance coverage.
Besides, for a mild condition that affects only small body areas (less than 10% of the total skin surface), topical (applied to the skin) treatments, such as creams, lotions, and sprays, can be very effective safe.
Further, for moderate to severe psoriasis affecting much larger areas of the body (> 10% or more of the total skin area), topical products may not be effective or practical to apply. And also, it may require ultraviolet light treatments or systemic medications (whole-body therapies, such as pills or injections).
So, Internal drugs tend to have higher risks. Since topical medicine does not affect psoriatic arthritis. Besides, systemic medications are generally needed to stop the progression to permanent joint destruction.
