Do I Need Surgery For Kidney Stones?

Suffering kidney stones can be a painful condition for an individual and cause unbearable pain along with other symptoms like blood in urine, back pain, etc. Many individuals describe pain due to kidney stones as the worst pain they ever experienced. If you are diagnosed with kidney stones, your doctor might have suggested the best treatment option suitable for you. Urologists often suggest the patients to undergo proper treatment for kidney stones right away, without delaying the treatment.

Not all kidney stones require surgery. Only after diagnosis and proper analysis of the condition will a urologist be able to tell you whether surgery is necessary for your kidney stone removal or not. You may be asked by your urologist to undergo certain diagnostic tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, blood test or a urine test to know the size and location of the kidney stones or other risks such as urinary tract infection (UTI).

Treatment For Small Kidney Stones

You will not need to undergo surgery for small kidney stones. Typically, stones less than 4 or 5 mm can pass on their own in the urine. Passing the stone naturally can sometimes be painful, or may go unnoticed. Pain associated with kidney stone passing out of the body is likely to go away in a few days. But if pain persists, or becomes severe, you should consult a urologist once.

Treatment For Larger Kidney Stones

Kidney stones which are relatively larger in size, more than 4 mm or 5 mm in diameter may not pass on their own as they are likely to get stuck in the ureter due to their large size. If the kidney stone gets stuck in the ureter, it can result in severe consequences and pain. If you have sudden or sharp pain along with symptoms like blood in urine, fever, chills or nausea, speak to your urologist right away.

Larger stones which get stuck and cause an obstruction in the urinary tract require immediate medical attention and are often treated with surgery. Delaying surgery for kidney stones when advised so should not be avoided. Untreated kidney stones are associated with an increased risk of damage to the kidneys and other serious complications including hydronephrosis or organ failure. and more frequent use of antibiotics. Large kidney stones or kidney stones which remain untreated can cause permanent damage to the kidney and may even result in permanent failure or kidney loss. Severe kidney damage associated with untreated or large kidney stones can occur without evident or noticeable symptoms. This makes prompt surgery for kidney stone removal necessary.

Delaying kidney stone removal due to fear of surgery or any other reason is a common mistake many patients make. If you or your family member is diagnosed with kidney stones, it is important to not delay kidney stone removal surgery as it can lead to severe complications and kidney damage.

Surgical Approach For Kidney Stone Removal

Factors which influence the stone passage include its size and location. The larger the stone is, more are the chances that it will need a surgery. Surgical removal of the kidney stone is usually recommended for stones more than 5 mm in size Surgery is also suggested to patients when nonsurgical options to get rid of the stone have failed. The procedures used today for kidney stone removal in Delhi are minimally invasive in nature and highly effective. The most common techniques for kidney stone removal in Delhi include shock wave lithotripsy (SWL), ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy (URS), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

Shockwave lithotripsy (SWL):

Is the least invasive kidney stone removal procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis. The urologist uses an X-ray or ultrasound to identify the stone, and shockwaves are used to break the stone into smaller fragments which are then passed through the urine. SWL is an effective option for kidney stones up to 2 cm, or 20 mm in size which are not located in the lower part of the kidney. SWL is a pain free procedure and the patient may require multiple sittings of this procedure.

Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy (URS):

Is a less invasive procedure that may be used for stones up to 2 cm or 20 mm in diameter, located anywhere in the kidney or ureter. During this procedure, a small ureteroscope is passed through the bladder, into the ureter, allowing the urologist to see the stone. A laser device is then used to break the stone into smaller fragments which can be removed directly or passed through the urine. URS is often suggested for ureteral stones, which are located in the lower part of the kidney, or stones which have been resistant to SWL.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL):

Is the most preferred option for removal of large kidney stones, typically greater than 2 cm or 20 mm in size. During PCNL, the urologist will make a small incision, of about half inch in the back through which the nephroscope is passed to extract the stone. Patients typically require to stay in the hospital for one or two nights after PCNL. PCNL is performed under the influence of anesthesia and thus the procedure is not painful for the patient.
