  • Altered posture and balance – Your posture may sag, or you may have problems with the balance due to Parkinson’s disease.
  • Loss of automatic movements – You may have a reduced ability to perform unconscious actions, such as blinking, smiling, or moving your arms when you walk.
  • Speech changes – You can speak softly, quickly, draw words, or hesitate before talking. So, your speech may be more monotonous rather than having the usual inflexions.
  • Writing changes – Typing can be difficult, and your writing can feel small.

Risk Factors of Parkinson’s Disease

  1. Age – It begins in middle or old age, and the risk increases with age. People generally develop the disease around the age of 60 or older.
  2. Inheritance – Having a close relative with Parkinson’s disease increases the chances of developing.
  3. Sex – Besides, men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than women.
  4. Difficulty thinking – You may have cognitive problems (dementia) and trouble thinking. They occur in the later stages of Parkinson’s disease. In addition, these mental problems are not very sensitive to drugs.
  5. Depression and emotional changes – You may experience depression, sometimes in the early stages.

Who is Affected by Parkinson’s Disease?

About 1 in 500 people are affected by Parkinson’s disease. So, most people with Parkinson’s begin to develop symptoms when they are over 50 years old. And also, about 1 in 20 people with the condition experience the first symptoms when they are under 40. Men are likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than women.

What is the Average Life Span of a Person with Parkinson’s Disease?

Patients generally begin to develop Parkinson’s symptoms around the age of 60. So, many people with PD live 10 to 20 years after diagnosis.

What Happens if Parkinson’s Disease is Left Untreated?

If left untreated, Parkinson’s disease worsens over the years. Besides, Parkinson’s disease can cause deterioration of all brain functions and premature death. However, life expectancy is normal to near normal in most patients treated for Parkinson’s disease.
